Modular Approach in Learning English

New postby jeannodinglasan » Thu Oct 02, 2008 2:17 pm

I'm Jeanno Lorenz G. Dinglasan, currently taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. I was schooled in Angelicum College, a non-graded learning institution when I was in my Elementary and High School days. Our manner of learning was self-paced, you have the freedom to acquire education in your own way unlike the traditional classroom setting wherein everyone studies the lessons altogether. All our subjects are modular, each module contains the discussion of the lesson and some activities for the students to answer. The teacher serves as the facilitator, he or she will not teach the lesson directly, instead the students will only consult them whenever they need clarifications on what the module was discussing.

Our English subject before was also modular. Having seen both the modular and the traditional way of teaching, I could say that both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Modules are good in developing the writing skills of the students. At the same time, the reading skills will be developed also. The disadvantage is that, the other two macro skills or listening and speaking will not develop.

Thus, having modular approch have its own flaws and good points.

Hello.

I also took up BSE in UST. Unfortunately, I already transferred to another school due to personal reasons. May I ask what year level are you currently in and your major? You may know some of my former classmates. :)
