Why is English so weird?

Post by TomTom »

English is a really big language with loads more words than most European languages. This is because of the history of merging different languages.

First you have Anglo-Saxon - a west Germanic language, then you get Viking influence on English and then the Norman influence on English to make the weird mix of modern English.

I think this is a fascinating topic. I actually made a video on it recently. Perhaps it could interest some people...

I'm an English tutor teaching English online through Skype. For me, one of the reasons why English is complicated because there are a lot of English words that are derived from other languages.

Language itself is alive because we made it so... the 300-400 (or more) million people who are native English speakers plus some who use English (language) as their second language make the English language alive, thus give rise to a lot of new words.

As Krisi mentioned, Language is alive. So, a number of new words are generated and registered on Oxford English dictionary like 'google' which means searching for something by using a search engine.
