VERBAL ZINGERS

Post by JEROME »

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom. And no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.

Criticism is a disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world. To direct attention to the excellent where the bad will dig its own grave and the imperfect may safely be left to that final neglect from which no amount of present undeserved popularity can rescue it. But what is clearly displayed is destroying and pulling down one!

The shallowest understanding and the rudest hand being equated to one’s finished task. And why when the arts advance towards their perfection, criticism advances with equal pace!

Criticism is dangerous because it wounds a man’s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance and arouses his resentment when not done the right way. Although, some say that it is much easier to be critical than to be correct, it can’t be denied that critics also try to guess themselves into a share of the artists’ fame.

Critics are tigers that tear not only their prey but also their own raging heart. They write about things they don’t like. They damn what they do not understand. They feed upon the carcasses of pieces for they don’t like their dressing and taste. They write out of mere revenge and spite.

The world is full of people who establish their worth by degrading others. They have pockets and purses full of put-downs and they’ll hand them out to anyone.

Verbal zingers zap us everywhere – on the road, when rough hour brings out the worst in people; in lines, when everyone’s patience is wearing thin; at work or at the dinner table, where people feel free to be rude – comments that are insensitive beyond belief.

Blame where you must and be candid where you can but be a critic with a good-natured heart. So all mendacious be damned with their faint praise!

Criticisms are good if they are expressed in constructive way.
