Is Grammar important ?

Hello everyone !!
Now i want everyone's attention here ! this is something reallly very important ( for me at least , cant say about u ppl )..
Ive noticed it a dozen times that the ppl who speak American english doesn't care even a bit about Grammar and stuff !! i mean the way they speak english sounds pretty good and somehow , modern ! but the grammar they use is like as if they are the student of 1st standard and dont know the ABCs of grammar and all that...Can anyone tell me why is that ? On the other hand , ive been noticing that British english speakers are very careful particularly about using correct grammar...and now what i wanna know and make sure of , is that is grammar tht important nowadays ? i mean do i need to correct my grammar before speaking in english ?
I believe that grammar's supposed to be the base of English language.And everyone should , and must , learn it if they want to speak the perfect english ! Why dont others think the way i do ?
