Idioms often do not make sense if you try to separate the words from the collective.

The best way is to buy a good dictionary of idioms.

Try this link:

'He was born on the wrong side of the bed' means he was born in a hut (born in poor condition), is it?

Actually the saying is "he (or she) was born on the wrong side of the blanket"
This means someone is a bastard. They were born to a mother who was unmarried.
