The word edge means "at the furthest point or points usually implying a corner" for example

"the cup was at the edge of the table about to fall off"

"the edges of a square are four straight lines which meet at four corners"

" the boy drew a line right off the edge of the paper"

Hope that helps with the word EDGE

Now "she lay on her bed, writhe in agony" can i assume that it is the word "writhe" that puzzles you?

if so, it is used to give a description of extreme pain usually trying to descirbe constant pain all over the body.

hope this helps
