"exploration" vs "expedition"

Post by micaelo »

Hi, I've got this exercise where I need to choose the correct option:
On........................ to the North Pole, the members of the group have to ensure a very high calorie intake.
a. explorations b. exhibitions c. expeditions
Apparently, the correct answer is c. expeditions, so could somebody explain to me the difference between "explorations" and "expeditions"? Please?

A dictionary helps here.

ex·pe·di·tion - noun

1. an excursion, journey, or voyage made for some specific purpose, as for war or for exploration.

2. the group of persons, ships, etc., engaged in such an activity.

You go with the official expedition to do your exploration. :)

To just explore is too general for the meaning they want.
