I am missing the meaning.

"I remember watching "violent" cartoons as a child. Of course, when I was a child, "violent" meant that people were shooting at each other with lasers...not that people were being shot with lasers."

Please help clarify the meaning here, I am not understanding what the author is trying to say.

Possibly . . . in the past people were shooting at each other but not killing; now they are shooting to kill and there is alot of blood and dead bodies.

"Shooting at" implies that the shooters are not hitting their intended targets.
