The morpheme is one of the central notions of grammar theory without which no serious attempt of grammar study can be made. one of the most difficult problems concerning morpheme is its definition.As the matter of fact ,the definition of morpheme is not an easy one. THE MORPHEMES ARE THE SMALLEST MEANINGFUL UNITS INTO WHICH A WORD ?FORM MAY BE DIVIDED.
Morphemes in modern English behave differently: some of them can be used independently,but some cannot. The morphemes which can be used independently are called free morpheme,but the ones that are not used independently are termed bound morphemes.In other words,the root of the word is always free morpheme ,but suffixes ,prefixes,infixes are bound ones.There are 4 types of morphemes in Englsih: 1)lexical.2)grammatical 3)lexico-grammatical 4) lexico-grammatical word morphemes.
