Listening to English

Post by sweran »

Listening to real English speech is not easy. It's not the same as listening to English-language radio or watching English-language television, because people don't really talk in real life the same way they do in the media. In real speech, people stumble and repeat themselves, misuse grammar, and use a lot of slang and particular expressions.

It is almost impossible to learn how to listen to English effectively unless you practice listening to actual conversations. Ideally you will be able to listen to these conversations, and, if it's available, view the transcript of the conversation at the same time to reinforce what you've heard. After that it's a matter of sheer volume of listening, because after a while you will start to hear the same words and expressions repeated over and over again, and these words and expressions will seep into your brain unconciously. Go to http://www.listeningesl.com for the kinds of conversations you should practice listening to.

Let's talk!

Post by RicardoNasco »

Hey,

I think it will be great we share language skills.
I usually stay online everytime at skype. My skype name is ricardo_nasc.

I am a brazilian. I live in Sao Paulo city. I like to talk and listen either. There is no special topic only a pleasure talk.

I hope we can talk as soon as possible!

 P.S.: The skype is a internet telecomunication service. After you downloded the software (not much memory required) they ask you to create a account (skype, name, password, profile if you want, photo, etc) then you sign in.
The best thing about skype is the quality of conection. You can chat, send files, call (it is free bettwen skypers users). Only you need for talk it is a headset.
The link for website is: http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html

I use their service about a 2 years and I like it. I use in my work too.

But I am sorry for this advertising, but I only said that because I use it everytime and everywhere so we can talk from all of the world there without telecomunicatios bills.

I hope you can find me there for start a conversation.

Bye,

Ricardo
P.S.: Feel free to contact me for more questions.

grammar software and sentence analysis

Post by jedwards »

When I write English on my pc I usually trust Word backed with another grammar software as my grammar and spelling checker, however, I found that as regarding to punctuation I still need to rely on guesswork regarding the correct use of comma. :?

Can anyone recommend of a professional english writing / editing tool that is able to analyze my sentences and correct me with the use of comma (and maybe some other “problematic” punctuation marks?).

Cheers,

Jerry.

Hello everyone, great to be here!

Hello, i'm new to this community. very nice to meet you all, i used to be an english teacher, now i'm working in IT field with many projects. I still love english language, it's one of the best language i've learned so far. Japanese is also cool.

Just for fun, I'm putting an IT+English language project, building a small but active long term friendship group.
English learners only.
still looking for few more people to register as new family members before closing new registrations. www.beavercanal.net.
private group, designed for less than 100 members who are willing to actively communicate with others.
Share, discuss, make Real close friends from around the globe that you can meet one day.
the system deletes inactive members every 30 days, not a place for unserious people.

Anyone also from the IT industry here?

If you are SERIOUS about making close friends from around the world using your english, join Beavercanal English Community at http://www.beavercanal.net/index.php?referredby=1
If you're not serious then you might just wasting your time bec non active members are deleted. And the members are limited, not too crowded making it more friendly and private. check it out, if you like the discussions, register there

If you like we could start with debating/discussing some issues through mail. Debating stuff will force you to think hard about how to structure your arguments which can be very useful when you try to improve your English.

If you're interested you can reach me at: *******.com

Dear Friend,
My name is Pheakdey from Cambodia. Here I am the latest member who want to improve my English as well, but I do not know how to increase. But I firmly hope that if we tried to study hard, so we would know English more as what we wanted. Otherwise, there are many ways that we might improve our language by doing:
1- Practise reading English everyday if we have any free time.
2- Listen to English everyday by listening to the radio....
3- Read English stories.
4- Go to visit anywhere that is spoken English, start making up dialogue with them.
And especially, if you wanted to know how to speak English well, you would be the instructor to your neighbours who have never studied English a bit before. And you would find how to speak Englis to your students to make them understand. Sooner you will be improvable more and more out of your expection.
Yours faithfully
Pheakdey

Hello my friends! :-)

Post by Mori »

I'm an EFL teacher at elementary and intermediate levels. However, English isn't my first language and sometimes I run into problems I need to talk about with an English native speaker and preferably an English teacher. I'd like to make friends with native speakers, especially Americans, and keep in touch with them via email, messenger, and so on. I’m looking for good friends and language guides at the same time. Please send me an email if you’re interested.
Many thanks in advance…

Well, in the past few months I do use an English grammar and proofreading software, although it cannot always catch very complex grammar structures, it helps me on fixing basic and common grammar errors. Can anyone recommend of advanced grammar analyzing tool for complex grammar writing assignments?

7 experiences to study English well

Post by denvinbo »

1/ Speaking out all the things you're thinking in mind:
_When using English, don't care about the mistakes. If u don't have mistake, it's mean that u won't learn anything. May be u will make small mistakes in English with foreigners. But the major is what can u summarize from ur mistakes. Like as the babies can't walk if they're afraid of falling......

2/ Defining which way of learning English is suitable for u:
_Recent examination makes known that many people have their own way of learning English. If u r a pictures liker, u can make a link between English and pictures such as u can watch movies with English subtitle, try to imagine where u r in English's context, imagine the words u should learn with pictures. If u r a listening liker, u should listen to English music as much as u can and watch English movies. If u like to analysing, let spend most of ur time to learn grammars and compare ur language with English.
_Of course, a good English learn will spend all his time to do all these things. But what a pity, many people is only taught by traditional way is concentrating on grammars and listening.

3/ Studying to remember:
_U can test ur memory by reading books. Most of good English learners appreciate this thing.

4/ Making ur own English environment:
_A Spanish successful businessman studied English by gluing yellow papers around his house, when he went to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee, take a bath or use the remote to change the TV channels, he always saw the words in those papers. When he remembered all those words, he changed new ones. By this way of study, he remembered 10 words per day, 7 days per week. U should read, listen and speak English anywhere and anytime.

5/ Let's access the Internet:
_internet has brought many benefits for English learner. U can find many useful websites to study grammars, vocabulary, pronounciation and now, the most important: communication.

6/ Learning vocabulary by system:
_Please notice that learning English is not only studying grammars. When communicating, u choose vocabulary, combine them and make a sentence to share ur thinking. When learning vocabulary, u should arrange them sensiblely. Don't list a long page of words, let separate them to their own section. For example:
- Theme: Shopping, Holidays, Money...etc...
- Verbs and Nouns together: do your homework, make a care...etc...
- Verbs with prepositions: to grow up, to fell off, to look after...etc...
- Fixed words: on the other hand, in my opinion, by the way...etc...
- Idioms: once in a blue moon, to be over the moon, out of the blue...etc...
- Words with prepositions: at night, at the weekend, in March, in 2008...etc...

7/ U should be excited:
_U should warm up and do all the things u can do today, don't gather for tomorrow.

Good luck! :-D
