train or training

Post by Fizzler »

So, a student of mine wrote "One thing I did was training in the swimming pool." I think that is incorrect, and I think the correct sentence would be "One thing I did was train in the swimming pool." I think it's because the sentence is talking about a completed action in the past at a certain point in time. I think you could say "One thing I was doing was training in the swimming pool" because this sentence is talking about a completed action in the past over a period of time. But I'm not sure about this. Any ideas?

I think the "one thing" makes it sound fishy. "I was eating a hamburger" doesn't sound strange to me.

Both are possible. Here, training is a gerund, which is like a noun:

There were many activities at the camp:
One thing I did was cookery.
One thing I did was gardening.
One thing I did was football.

Among the other things I did yesterday is that I trained (exercised hard) in a swiming pool.
It was lasting for two hours!

The main thing among the others what I did yesterday is that I was training for two hours in a swiming pool.

I trained in a swiming pool yesterday.

Did you do any of your swiming exercises yesterday?
Yes I was training for an hour.

Have you done your today's swiming excersises?
Not yet. :-)

Any mistakes?

no, I felt so shameful, because I was fascinated with the Charmed TV show, it was so wonderful that I have no time to swimming.
