"On" gives an impression the parts are attached directly to the back of the machine. "At" tells you the general location of where the parts should attach (the rear of the vehicle).
Take for example a truck with an attached trailer. The trailer is attached ON the rear of the vehicle because the trailer hitch connects it to the truck.
The trailer is attached AT the rear of the vehicle because it is attached towards the back, not the front.
Someone AT a grocery store would be in the general location of the store. Someone ON a grocery store would be standing on the roof.
