berth ~ bed in a cabin of a ship.
You could not hope for a cabin (to) for yourself
porthole ~ a small round window in a side of a ship
slicking ~ to cause hair to be smooth onto the head
lustrous ~ very shiny (eyes)
exuberant ~ very vital
bone-dry ~ extremaly dry, really dry
ginger ale ~ a fizzy drink containing ginger
fizzy ~ producing bubles in the water
lemon squash ~ something like lemonade
hip pockets ~ pockets at both side of his clothes above his legs and under his waist, at the hips
flask ~ not a big flat bottle usualy with alcohole in it
tumbler ~ a small roun container (to put peaces of ice in it)
put on airs ~ to behave as if you are more important then you really are
the ten on the knave ~ the player playing cards had a knave in his hands and then got a ten (bad luck for him)
exasperating ~ extremely anoying
snub ~ ignore
got up quoit and golf matches, "quoit" ??
He was certainly the best haled man in the ship. "haled" ??
jovial ~ friendly by reason of being in a good mood
loquacious ~ talking a lot
affront ~ to refuse to get
overweening ~ having and shoving to much confidence in everything
vanity ~ selfish
cocksureness ~ ??
acrimonious ~ much worse then "not nice"
interminable ~ for too long boring and annoying
bulged out ~ stick out in a fat shape
demeanour ~ a way of looking and behaving
diminish ~ to decrease value of something
to fling ~ to say angrily, to argue angrily
vehement ~ to be vehement is to show show feeling, energy etc..
sting ~ hurt (sting, stung, stung)
thumped ~ to hit something or someone with your fist

vaguely ~ not clear in shape, expression, or anything
