you dope

Post by DavidDe »

Hello,

I would like to know the meaning of 'you dope' in the following conversation.

While a family just got out from the house happily going to their friends house for thanksgiving :
"Are we taking the truck?", the son said.
"We're going up the street, you dope.", the father.

One meaning of "dope" is "idiot" or "stupid person". In this context, it's a friendly way of saying "idiot" and not really meaning it.

Another meaning of "dope" is "illicit drugs", but that doesn't apply here.
