Used to live vs have lived

Post by Englisdave »

yeah, my student asked me this during class yesterday. She said;

What's the difference between - I used to live in Barcelona / I have lived in Barcelona.

Apologies if this has been asked before, in the wrong section or if it's just plain stupid lol

Any advice appreciated. Cheers!

As far as I understand this, you can say "I used to live in Barcelona" when you live in other city now. And it would be correct.

When you say "I have lived in Barcelona" (it doesn't sound right to me) usually it implies some number, so "I have lived in Barcelona for ten years" would be a correct sentence. And I suppose that you're living there now or left the city not so long ago.

Actually context of the examples would be very much appreciated.
