No,they not only use different pronuncation but the words.I mean in GuangDong/Hong kong,their daily life words are totally distinct from mandarine.It is really a exception .

Oh you meant like the same character, for example a bowl, but it could be meant something else in Cantonese than it is in Mandarine?

That is not what I mean.Since I am not a linguist,I am not sure whether you can understand what I mean(I mean,the same meaning we will us different words),but I still want to try to make it clear.OK,let me give you a example.
In Mandarine:" 我" mean "I",while in Cantonese "偶".
The two charecter have same meaning but they are different word and different prunucation.　"偶＂this charecter we seldom use nowdays in Mandarine,I only read it less than twice in Chinese ancient prose.

This is a question for our Chinese members: Is Cantonese a language different from Mandarine? Or is it a variety of the language?

It’s a dialect of Chinese. In china, there are countless dialects. People speak Mandarine so they can communicate all the Chinese, or they need an interpreter, Each dialect is VERY, VERY different.
