Asian Cinema

Postby Unknownsu » Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:43 am

Let's face it, Asian cinema has been becoming more and more known internationally. Personally, I have been a huge fan of Hong Kong movies for some time now but recently, have been critical for their lack of quality productions.

My interest, therefore, have been shifted over to the Koreans. I started watching Korean movies just over a year ago and I must admit, they took me by surprise! The quality and ingenious themes of their recent blockbusters, in my opinion, set a new standard for Asian cinema.

I am an avid Asian movie fan and would love to discuss all sorts of movies with anyone who is interested. Thai, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hong Kong, all are welcomed!

Seems like a mama boy! Sitting home watching long, dramatic Korean series with mama and sista.

I don't know about Thai, but Vietnamese movies are not as good as other Asian's movies yet. I mean, I love the country with all my heart, but the truth is our entertainment industry is not as big as Hong Kong, Mainland China, Korea, Japan, or India. Vietnamese people know more about other Asian actors and actresses than their own. If you wanna see some Vietnamese actors and actresses, you can check out for "Good morning Vietnam," "Cyclo" (Tony Leung is in it, by the way ;) ). If you wanna see something about Vietnam, check out "Heaven and Earth,"the scent of green Papaya, or "vertical ray of the Sun." Those are movies about Vietnam but I don't think the actors and actresses are from Vietnam--they're oversea Vietnamese.
You can check out this link to know more about those movies,

This is the guy who's made those movies. Click on the movies on his profile to see their summaries.

I've seen a few Thai films and they really didn't leave an awe-inspiring impression on me. So far, the best Thai movie I saw was Legend of Suriyothai. Then it would be Ong Bak. Not so much for the plot, but for the original fighting sequences. Ong Bak is coming to western theatres. :D

Violet, I don't know where you could find Thai or Vietnamese movies. You just have to look around, I guess. Here, usually places that sell Hong Kong movies sell other Asian movies as well.

Lennye, Good morning, Vietnam is an OK movie - nothing special. However, Heaven and Earth is an awesome Vietnam-based epic! But I have to say, both of these movies are not Vietnamese productions. They are Hollywood movies. Oliver Stone directed Heaven and Earth. He also directed Born on the Fourth of July and Platoon which are also based on the Vietnam War, post and during, respectively. But nothing beats Apocalypse Now: Redux.

I wanted to find Cyclo once but the only version I found was the French version with no subtitles. :? I heard of Vertical Rays of the Sun and Scent of the Green Papaya but I have yet to see them. If I remember right, Essie has seen both and I think I recall him telling me that they were OK movies.

I haven't watched vertical ray of the sun yet, but i have watched the scent of the green papaya and it was gay to me  . I meant, the whole movie was so slow; the plot did not make any sense. I watched it when I was in Vietnam and it bored the hell outta my mind. When I came over here, I watched it again in my ESL class. I thought I would like it if I understood it more, but it turned out that I slept through most of it. I guess I'm just not deep enough to get that guy's movies.

I have seen this “cyclo”. I bought this DVD long time ago because of Tony Leung. However, This movie is not as good as I expected. I don’t really understand what the director wants to say, particularly why the boy play with the golden fish in the fish tank. What the director wants to tell us? Anyway, it makes me full of question marks in my head after watching this movie.

About Hong Kong movies, This is the fact that the productive has been dramatically deceased and some of them in bad quality, however, its quality has been improved recently compare with other movies made after 1997(the year of financial crisis). Last year, We have “Internal Affair I, II & III”. This series is good, especially, if you like Tony Leung and Andy Lau. ;)

Oh my god, this movie is the bomb. Last time, I went to watch the first part with my boyfriend in the theater and gosh, it was so sad; I was sad for several days. Tony Leung was increadible and Any Lau, Andy, Andy, Andy...... he was the evil one in that movie  . He broke my heart when he killed the guy and Tony in the elevator. It was such a sad movie although it was too good.
I haven't watched the II and III ones yet, but I'm not looking forward to seeing it. I don't like Leon Lai and I think he is in the II one, right?

These are great movies, Part I is not the best among the others. I think that Part III is the best. Leon Lai is ok, I am not trying to defense for him, I don’t like him though, but he is better than more than I expected, honestly he is fairly good in Part. Btw he only appears in Part III.

If you think Part I is good, then Part III is highly recommended. It is no doubt that Tony Leung is the best in these series, also you might notice some characters you don’t know. I must mention one to you, he is Mr. Chan Dao Ming, he acted as an undercover from China police department in Part III. He is one of top 10 actors in China. I really admire him very much. Other actors and actress are also good. Today is Saturday in Hong Kong, if you are in Asia, we are in the same time zone. I suggest you to borrow both Part II and Part III from blockbuster and finish them on Sunday. I hope you will like them. ;)

Well, he's kinda gay to me. Actually, he's pretty gay to me. I'd prefer to watch Aaron Kwok or other actors more than watching him. I've watched his series movie, which he was in it with Lau Ching Wan and Kitty Lai and hat movie sucked big time.

I know all of them actors and actresses in part one. I've seen the nice Hong Kong triad guy, the one who warned Tony about people who kept looking at you for a long time, that person might be a undercover cop. Remember that guy? I have seen his movie. And that guy in the elevator at the end I have seen his movies too.
 Have been being a fan of Hong Kong movies since I was a little kid, I think I can name most of their names.
