I agree with you Chet! I've seen a lot of Korean movies and if they were not in the original soundtrack, I would not watch it. A lot of K movies have Cantonese and Mandarin voice dubs but I prefer the original language. ;)

What about other Asian movie industries? Do you watch movies from India, Japan, Singapore or Taiwan?

I've never seen a Bollywood production or Singaporean. As for Japanese, I like Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl directed by Katsuhito Ishii. Weird movie name but interesting. I saw his other movie, Party 7, which was also good.

Among my favroites are Zatoichi, Satorare: Tribute to a Sad Genius, Azumi, and Battle Royale. If you want to be severely disturbed, watch Ichi the Killer or Visitor Q. These movies will leave your eyes opened and jaws dropped. Same director, I think.

I don't watch many Taiwanese movies. The most memorable one was Double Vision. And it wasn't that good. The actors were Tony Leung (not the one you love) and David Morse.

Have you seen any of the movies I've mentioned? What about you? Chet, I know you've watched a lot of foreign films. Give us your take on some of them.

I have seen several movies that are Bollywood-made, one Singaporean drama series movie, and several Japanese-made movies; they all were quite good, actually.
I've seen Battle Royale and gosh, it scared me to my every bones the first time I was watching it--too much killing and the plot was just plain bizarre.

Cool, Unknownsu. It seems that You like the style of Kinji Fukasaku(北野武), I saw “BR 1 & 2”, “Zatoichi”, I have seen other of his movies, but I can’t find their English name. I will try to find at home later on. Kinji’s movie are remarkable. But I have never seen his old movies made before 1990.
I have heard Bollywood, but I don’t know too much about it. It seems that Bollywood movies are only for domestic market, without any disrespect to any Indian, I think that it may because most of their stories are related to their religions and their social standard are quite different with other Asian countries. As Singaporean’s movie, the one I have seen was “I not stupid”, It eventually become TV series of TVB broadcast. It is educational file. It is good though, but not my cup of tea.

(Chet’s recommendation)

Joint Security Area (JSA)
(Korean) (I will buy VCD later; it is included in my collection list)

My Sassy Girl (Korean) (feeling of first love, what can I say!)

Old boy (Korean) (it is included in Hong Kong Film festival, my friend saw it, he said good and I trusted him.)

Swiri (aka: Shiri) (I saw it and it is worth to buy)

Leon – professional (USA) (this is masterpiece, its soundtrack is wonderful, especially, The shape of my heart - sting)

Amelie (French) (This is excellent, but the feeling of this movie is quite hard to describe even in my mother language)

Xiu Xiu - The Sent-Down Girl (China) (the girl is very beautiful. It is a sad movie)[/b]

Chet,if I remember right, The director of BR 1 & 2 is Kinji Fukasaku(
深作欣二), and Zatoichi was directed by Takeshi Kitano(北野武).

You might not be able to believe, but Kinji Fukasaku had been accused by some media for his BR because of its much of violent scenes.

Anyway, I love "Shaolin Soccor" you mentioned, I think this is great. I love some of Kung movies....but I can't name them. I am a big fan of Kung.

Thank you Meg, You are right, I may have confused the name of Director.

The Director of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer is Stephen Chow(周星馳), I think he is the best comedic actor in Hong Kong since 90s'. Have you ever seen his earlier movie? These movie are also good and some of them were directed by Stephen himself. If you are interested about him, please see other topic in Asia which is known as "** Stephen Chow**".

Do you know that one of his fans in Japan, he is an author and a director of Japanese movie "Sleepless Town", he named himself as "馳星周" as he is also a big fans of Stephen.

Do you know Sleepless Town "不夜城", preformed by 金城武 (he is cool) and 山本未來(not bad in this movie). This is killer movie. it is not too bad though, as Killer movie, i still prefer LEON - the professional. <---this is killer movie.

Excellent recommendations, Chet! JSA is one of my all-time favorite Korean movies. I loved the way the director presented the story. And the sound track....ohhhhh....awesome!

My Sassy Girl is good too. Although I loved the director's other movie, The Classic. It's my favorite Korean movie and I must've watched it over 10 times in a period of 2 years. You should check it out. He also directed Windstruck. He used the same girl in My Sassy Girl. She looked better in Windstruck. ;)

Believe your friend, Old Boy is a great movie! It might be a bit disturbing for some viewers though.

Shiri was one of the first Korean movies I've seen and although I thought it was mediocre, many of my friends loved it.

You speak very highly of Leon - Professional. Do you think I can get it here? I want to check it out!!! I've seen Amelie at movie stores but I've never seen it. Xiu Xiu sounds so familiar. I know I've seen that title somewhere before. I love sad movies!

Wow, thanks for the recommendations, Chet, I will definitely look into finding these movies.

I'm afraid I've only seen BR 1 and 2 from Kinji Fukasaku. The Zatoichi I saw was directed by Takeshi Kitano. Here is a list of Kinji's filmography:

Unknownsu's recommendations:

My Tutor Friend (Korean) - Kim Ha-Neul is so cute!!! Hilarious romantic comedy. Cute male character (Or so my gal pals told me.)

The Classic (Korean) - Also a first-love story. Excellent cinematography and soundtrack.

A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean) - If you like horror and suspence, this is the movie for you. My second favorite Korean.

Memories of Murder (Korean) - Something about this movie leaves you in awe. It's based on a true story.

Satorare: Tribute to a Sad Genius (Japanese) - Interesting storyline and very sad.

Ong Bak aka Thai Warrior (Thai) - If you like martial arts, this movie kicks ass! Don't watch for the story though. ;)

Chet, don't buy VCDs!!!!! These movies are soooooo much more enjoyable if you watch them in anamorphic widescreen DVD!!!!

I feel the same way, too. Also, they have too much singing and group dancing in their movies. And when it comes to a kiss or whatever, they'll burst into dancing. I meant, what the heck is that! I'd like to see a kiss and not a dance. I wonder if they'll add kissing while dancing in their movies in the future. If yes, it'd be interesting to watch.
