There is a risk involved running into a bad person :). It is better to have a period of observation before taking a move to meet someone from the cyber :)

Sophie,

I agree with whl626 that it is best “to have a period of observation” before marrying someone you meet on line. There is a lot of risk marrying someone with whom you had only corresponded on line, because people can (and do) disguise themselves well on line and may never show their true selves.

On the other hand, I can tell you that I have a friend (a white person) who met a Chinese lady from Taiwan on line and after a period of on line correspondence my friend flew to Taiwan several times and went on dates with her. They have been married now for several years and are quite happy. So I guess we can say that these marriages can turn out all right.

By the way, I’d suggest that perhaps a better way to write the original question is “Will you marry someone whom you met on line?” In other words, the preposition with is not needed for the verb marry, and the object pronoun whom should be used instead of the subject pronoun who.

' Who ' is the accepted form in American English, though :)

whl626,

I agree that who is widely accepted in American English, where the object pronoun whom has virtually disappeared in everyday conversation. Still, it is the proper word that standard English requires. Generally, though, you would not see or hear the word whom except in more formal communications (such as in school papers, exams, more literal magazines, a public speech), or when you are communicating with one who is more concerned than the average person about using standard English (e.g., someone like your English professor). (By the way, I am NOT an English professor.)

For our purposes here, I think it’s best if we all understand what is required by standard English, but adjust our usage based on the circumstances (who is your listener, what does the audience comprise, etc.), and use who or whom so you can best convey what you try to say.

I am studying English on my own with no professor backing me up :R . I sort of agree with you that we must stick to the originality of something before we are good enough to tweak it for convenience sake :)
