I wanna know more info about names in the US

Postby ice_breaker » Sun Oct 02, 2005 5:00 am

As far as I know, most parents in the United States give their babies a first, middle, and last name when they are born. The last name is generally their family name. What about first name ?
In the US, some children's names are also the names of cities, such as Geneva or Savannah. Pls tell me more names about the names of cities.
In addition, some names are plants or flowers, such as Rosemary, Daisy, Lily or Iris. Can anyone tell me more names of plants or flowers ?
Moreover, religious names from the Bible or Koran are also common like Isaac, Mohammed or Eve, pls tell me more ?
Americans even choose names from other countries, Liam is popular Irish name, Pierre and Sebastian are French, pls tell me more info about names from other countries.

Thanks in advance !

Type on Google, baby names, and you'll get a bunch of names. It'll even give you a list of most popular names of the year and the meaning of each name. Usually Michael, Joseph, Emily, Ashley, etc. are popular in the States.

The range is too broad and it could take awhile. As much as people want to help you, we can't stay online forever to do this. Thus, you have to get on Google and get a bunch of names in the areas you wanted to search yourself.

Thank you so much Vince90. I've been surfing that website many times.
Luckily, I just met one American lecturer at school and asked him lots of questions and he answered to me clearly. I am really happy because of his explanation.

Sometimes, parents consider the monogram. Special English writer Jill Moss named her son Adam Isaac Moss, his monogram is A-I-M or the word aim.
Can anyone tell me more info about monogram?
Thanks in advance,

"A monogram is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol. Monograms are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company. Monograms may be used as recognizable symbols or logos. An individual's monogram is often a very fancy piece of art for adorning luggage, clothing, and so forth.

Some monograms, like the interrobang, are not used for companies. These, rather, are used as letters, punctuation, and the like."
(copied from wikipedia's monogram)

Let's see, I don't think parents should name one of their kids Tyler Isaac Thomas if their last name is Thomas because the kid's initial or monogram would be T.I.T or the word tit (it means a woman's breast). Gosh, think of the times he would be bullied or made fun of by his classmates because of his tit name   .
