One of the most popular variations of samba is called "pagode", it's played in lots of radios and its musics usually have love or funny lyrics. The last of the popular variation of samba is that played in the carnival.
Other variation of samba is called "choro", and it's usually instrumental. It's not so popular.
So, answering your question, samba is still the most famous rithm in Brazil.
