The country is the UNITED STATES of AMERICA (U.S.A), which makes them Americans. They're not called Americans because they live in Northern America. You seem to have a problem with racial prejudice to me.

No racism problem at all... no no, don't get me wrong, you know that if I go to a place like, let's say... Germany and I say "Hey! I'm from America" people are gonna think that I'm from the US, and if I say, "No, I'm from Costa Rica" they are going to think that I'm stupid because I say I'm american but I'm from out of the US, that was my point.

Obviously I didn't make it clear enough for some people, but if I offended anybody I assure you it wasn't my intention, but we need to educate people so they don't visualize "America" as a single country, which is basically what happens nowadays. :D

I see where you're coming from; however, in English language, we rarely call people from America continent as Americans although it's a right term. I, myself, would hate just being called as Asian since it's not specific enough to me. I'm Vietnamese and when I tell others I'm Vietnamese, they'd automatically know I'm Asian. I believe the same idea applied to other ethnicities in North and South America continents.

Yeah, but my point is that, somehow when people hear the "american" word, they relate it for the US exclusively, you see, American commonly makes people think of the US and no other countries...If you say "I'm asian" I would ask you which Asian country... common mistakes, really, that's all... glad we got each other's idea, I actually want to be as kind as possible and you do sound strong tempered, is everyone from Vietnam like that? So determined, or is it just you?

I stand corrected.

I totally agree with EPS. I have discussed this issue with American (from the US) friends hundreds of times. Some of them don't seem to understand that AMERICA is a continent, not a country.

Exactly! That was my point all along! Thank you guys, I do this kind of comments to help educating people, so they see that America includes from the very top of it, to Tierra del fuego, Chile.... not even a drop of harmful comments, thought, just educating

I beg my pardon, but I'm more inclined to follow Lennye's idea... I wouldn't call a Brazilian or Argentinian an American... and just dare to call a Canadian - an American... even in South Park cartoons they are drawn differently

What would you call a person from the United States of America?
