Why stay out of the water?

Postby Shazzam » Wed Oct 12, 2005 1:02 pm

In Australia at the moment there is alot of fear around entering the water due to the fact that there has been some shark attacks in South Australia and some crocodile attacks in the Northern Territory.

To be honest there has alway been a huge White Pointer (Shark) population around South Australia. Most people that live in this area are aware the the dangers before they enter the water; but the chose to do so at their own risk.

The same is applied to the Northern Territory.

Crocodiles have always been a threat in the Northern Territory. Locals are well aware of the dangers. To a certain extent so are most visitors. I'm not sure if the government is doing enough to educate over-seas visitors of the dangers of swimming in certain places in the Northern Territory.

Do you think that there are enough warning signs?

What do you think the Australian Governments could do to make over-seas visitors more aware of the dangers?

Maybe the legislature should make some laws to keep people away from danger.

There definately aren't enough signs in places to let people know of the dangers. Even at local beaches (locals know where to swim) but visitors don't. Most beaches have lifeguards that put flags on the beach to show where you should swim; but alot of people don't understand why the flags are there.

When my mother first came to Australia (she was only very young) she thought the flags "looked nice". She had no idea that they were there for you to swim in between them (silly goose).

I suppose local councils aren't inclined to put signs up saying "we saw some man-eating sharks in this area last week, swim at your own peril." Imagine what that would do for local tourism.
