In Australia it is very confusing. The legal age to vote is 18. The legal age to drive is 16. The legal age to leave home is 16 (even younger in some cases). The legal age to be prosecuted by law for an offence as an adult is 18. The legal age for a parent to be still supporting a child is 25 (this is determined by Centrelink). A government body like social security.
So at 18 they can vote, drink, drive and break the law.
BUT: they are still legally the financial responsibility of a parent (even if they make all of the above decisions) until the are 25 years of age. How convenient for the government.
The obvious issue that arises is that if a person aged 18 years of age, for example: gets involved in a car accident where another person is injured; the parents can be sued for compensation. Even if that person doesn't live at home.
The whole thing is very confusing to me.
