Public perception of smoking had changed with on 17.4 per cent of Australians now smoking on a daily basis. NSW Health tobacco manager Dr John Sanders said at the 3rd Australian Tobacco Control Conference being held in SYdney.
But a high prevalence of smoking among specific groups such as young women, lower socio-economic and indeigenous groups was still a problem, he said.
"Australia has come a long way in reducing smoking rates across the country (but)...it is very important that in the future we target these groups within our society" Dr Sanders told reporters.
NSW Cancer Council CEO Dr Andrew Penman said the council's next push was for better regulation to limit the availability of tobacco and lobby for more smoke-free public places.

I'm not even going to write the rest of this article as it is so long winded and boring it makes me feel like a cigerette
You pretty much can't smoke anywhere these days in Australia; the lobbying has worked. RSL Clubs and Public bars are doing it tough as trade has reduced due to the bans.
Ok I agree you have to have smoke free areas; no doubt. But i'm starting to feel like smokers are the victims of do gooders now. I mean if I want to have a cigerette that is my choice. As long as I don't smoke amongst people against it (or children) it is up to me.
