He was one of the few Victoria Cross winners. Loved by his men but portrayed as a fool by a stupid Hollywood movie about the Kwai bridge in Burma.

I haven't thought about Weary Dunlop since I was in primary school! I keep getting him confused with the guy with the donkey ( I can't remember his name). :?:

I never saw a movie about him thought (especially HOLLYWOOD). I wouldn't have thought that they would be interested in an Australian doctor :?:

It was John Simpson (and his donkey). Also different war (he was with the ANZACS at Gallipoli). I remember hearing the stories about him as a child as he was a great hero. He was originally born in the UK, but served with the Australian's. I must admit I don't remember alot about his background; but I do remember the stories of his bravery carrying injured men to get medical treatment on the back of a donkey.

The movie was not about Dunlop specifically. It just had a major character in the movie, the doctor of the POW camp, who in real life was Dunlop. The movie is The Bridge on the River Kwai, with William Holden.

OMG I have watched that movie at least five times in my life; it also had Alec Guiness in it (i think). My father was a mad keen war movie buff. I swear at his funeral we should have the theme from "Kelly's Heroes" played.

Obviously I didn't pay enough attention to miss the connection.
