Dear teacher,

About 22 architectural firms responded to the call. Of those, the list was whittled down to four prestigious, if esthetically conservative, firms: Rafael Viely Architects, Polshek Partnership Architects, Michael Graves & Associates and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm that is now overseeing the Freedom Tower at ground zero.

Q : What does "if esthetically conservative" mean in the sentence?

All the best, :)

'If' here means 'although/albeit'. 'Esthetically conservative' means 'conservative in their artistic tastes'.
