introgative pronoun

Postby hanuman_2000 » Wed Oct 27, 2004 5:57 am

1.What has happened?

2.What do you mean?

I have read that

In 1) sentence the introgative pronoun "what" is subject of verb "has happened". Is it right?

2) introgative pronoun "what " is object of verb.

But I am confused , how in sentence (2) the pronoun "what"

is object of the verb.

Because the subject is 'you'.

Interrogative pronouns, unlike ordinary nouns as objects, come first in the sentence, so they may look like subjects. That is probably the cause of your confusion.
