When my sister___at the college 2 years ago, she___to learn
several foreign languages.

A) was studying / tried
B) studied / was trying
D) was studying / was trying

Which one(s) is/are correct? If more than one answer is correct,
which one would be the most natural choice?

All are grammatically possible. A would probably be the most natural.
