'about': adverb or preposition?

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum. I'm wondering if 'about' in the following sentence is an adverb or preposition:
I was about to cry.
The confusing thing for me is it is defined as an adverb in Webster's New World Children's Dictionary, but as a preposition in Webster's New World Student's Dictionary.
Thanks,
Clarence
