Which is correct when "data" is plural?

Mid-stage data look promising.
Mid-stage data looks promising.

Strictly speaking, 'data' is always plural, making your first sentence technically the only correct form (singular: datum).

Increasingly, however, the plural form is treated as singular in daily usage.
