A type of question

Post by Rustamsher »

I am interested in the kind of questions in which word order is different from normal questions after we add "Do you know", May I ask"...
For example:
What is it? But after adding "Do you know" the word order is different:
Do you know WHAT IT IS

Or another example:
What is your phone number?
But: May I ask WHAT YOUR PHONE NUMBER IS?

Is there a grammatical name for bold sentences?
Thanks.

They are generally termed embedded noun clauses.
