Subject Verb Agreement (Follow up question #2)

Post by Nami Nami »

Dear teacher,

Thank you for your reply. I still do not quite understand, hope you don't mind I keep asking.

For the sentence "Mobile apps have become one of the most popular channels that connect the Government with the people", you said:

The antecedent of the relative pronoun in a restrictive clause following the construction "one of the -s" is always the plural noun, not 'one'.

My questions are:

1. Can I interpret it in this layman way: "that" modifies "one of the most popular channels", specifically, it modifies the head of that phrase, which is "one"; and "one" refers to "Mobile apps", so it makes "that" plural. Is this "intepretation" correct?

Could you please tell me which of the following are correct (just to make sure my understanding is correct, sorry about this)?

2. He is one of the students who goes to school by helicopter.

3. He is one of the students who go to school by helicopter.

4. They are one of the teams who have won 6 times this year.

5. They are one of the teams who has won 6 times this year.

Thanks a lot!

1. No. As I have already made clear, the antecedent of the pronoun in this construction is exclusively the plural object of the preposition, not the pronoun 'one'.

2. #2 and 5 are incorrect!

N.B. I will not be answering any further follow-up questions on this point!
