Dear Alan
If the sentence 'More people came than had been expected' is correct, what is the part of speech of 'than' pl.? Is it coordinating conjunction or subordinating conjunction? If it is subordinating conjunction, is it proper to use the finite verb 'had been expected' without the subject pl.?

'Than' is a subordinating conjunction.
Omission of the subject is actually obligatory in this type of construction.
