Intransitive verbs and adjectives

Post by vpkannan »

Dear Alan

You have said in an earlier post that the adjectives or even nouns can complement intransitive verbs as in 'They parted friends.' Under such circumstances, can we call the verbs linking verbs? Or, can we say when there is no proper adverb form to describe an intransitive verb, we can use adjectives or nouns in the place of adverb?

With regards

Most grammarians probably would not term them linking verbs. Your second description would be a more accurate way of putting it.
