Direct vs indirect questions

Post by Emmabemma »

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me with the following example:

'Can I ask you a question?... How do I get to the Manhattan shopping centre?'

In the answer guide, it states that this is an example of a direct question. I understand why the first half is, due to the word order, but I am struggling to understand what makes the second half so?

Thanks {-:

I fail to understand your question. Both are identically constructed direct questions. (Can I...? How DO I...?)

An example of an indirect question would be your own opening sentence (I was wondering...)!
