More nouns one after another

Post by ResearcherCZ »

Hello,
I have a question about omitting "of" and putting more nouns one after another. I would like to write a heading like this:

Mechanisms of drug resistance and virulence genes spread among bacteria
(Meaning of the sentence - mechanisms by which drug resistance genes and virulence genes are spread...).

There is no verb (it's a heading), word "spread" is a noun. My question is if it is possible to write it in this way or if there should be more "of" prepositions like below:

Mechanisms of the spread of drug resistance and virulence genes among bacteria

To make it as simple as possible, my two options can be written in this way:
1) Mechanisms of genes spread
2) Mechanisms of the spread of genes

Which one of these two options is correct and more natural?

Thank you a lot for your explanation.

#2 is more natural-sounding.
