Was vs Were

Post by RebeccaLee »

Could anyone explain the difference between the way the adverb 'was' is used in these two sentences:
"500 were killed" vs. "500 were died"
I know the second one is wrong but I can't explain why...?

Thank you so much for your help.

'Die' is not a transitive verb and cannot therefore not be passivized.
