Dear teacher,
1) I’d like to clarify if we can leave out the word “rather” in the following sentence structures without affecting their meaning.
a) Nancy would prefer to swim rather than go camping.
b) Nancy prefers to swim rather than go camping.
2) Please kindly advise if the following sentences have the same meaning?
a) Peter would rather his mother cooked dinner tonight.
b) Peter would rather cook dinner by his mother tonight.
I’d be grateful if you would get back to me. Thank you!

Re: Preferences
1. Not obligatory, but much more idiomatic to include 'rather'.
2. (b) is not grammatical, so no!
