Semi-Modal “dare”

Post by Bnplbnpl »

Hello Alan,

I know the past form of the regular verb “dare” is “dared”. How about the semi-modal “dare”? Would you please tell me if it has a past form too? Is its past form also “dared”? If so, is it correctly used in the following example sentence?

Dave dared not go to that forest in his childhood.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance!

Yes. The usage is a little literary-sounding, but possible.

Conversationally, "didn't dare to go" would probably be preferred.
