Does this make sense:
"Part of this involved going through the manufacturer’s handbooks in order to understand what needs to be replaced and at what time scales."
Can I write the past tense, 'involved' right before the present tense, 'going'?
Is there another way I can say this?
confusing past and presence tense?

Re: confusing past and presence tense?
Yes, it's perfectly correct as written!
('Going' is not a present tense but simply a form known as a gerund. )
