Nah, I don't think so. They are not afraid of bad publicity as they see this tragic event is a way to unite Chinese people together. In fact, they want the press to cover this story even more (now and after), which can overshadow the inhuman stories in Tibet and get a great sympathy from others. For instance, although some Chinese are united to stand against the pro-Tibet activists, they still feel the press are not with them. This earthquake makes all the protesters go away. The world is now just watching Chinese parents with griefs, something that touches everyone's heart, ya know. Also, the earthquake is a natural disaster, but total death toll is human fault. The thing is, you don't see many of them blame their government for what happened to the death ones, do you? It shows their loyalty and patriotism to their country (even though it's quite blindly loyalty in my opinion); it's their way to show no one can shoot the united Chinese down with opinions and protests.
