Amy Tan, isn’t she an Asian woman who lives in San Francisco? I remember reading a few of her essays in my English class a couple years ago. I don’t remember the titles, but the essays were about immigrant experiences in America. I found them very interesting because I could make a comparison to my own life and my own experiences as an immigrant.LennyeTran wrote:LennyeTran wrote:

Yeah, her stories are used to represent Asian-Americans in English classes in the States. She writes about how different it is to be raised in two cultures: Asian and American, how hard it is to identify as which one, etc. One of her famous stories is The Joy Luck Club. I think you've heard of it, right?Cypress wrote: Amy Tan, isn’t she an Asian woman who lives in San Francisco? I remember reading a few of her essays in my English class a couple years ago. life oh life...
you are talking about your favourite books while in the meantime...Mr Collins proposed to Elisabeth and wasn't specially discouraged with her decline. On the contrary he found it her momentary lack of reason. What a story! She refused and her mother wanted to throw her out of house cause she didn't want to pay for her any longer! Well... what an affair! Imagine what talks were being done in local... shrubberies. Elisabeth Bennet refused to Collins and Mr Bingley left for London - for 6 months probably! Only God knows what can happen in the meantime. Sisters didn't tell their mother about whole letter Jane had received. Wise sisters or not? Who can know it.
Read "Pride and Prejudice" - a fact literature:)

Absolutely NOT!!!Cypress wrote:Shame on me because I haven’t read any book by Dan Brown
There’s nothing special! Just usual boulevard novels.
It’s not great literature of great authors.
In most cases you’d better to spend you valuable time on books with little more thinking opportunities and life problems…

So far, all the people I talked to about Dan Brown’s books either liked them a lot or strongly disliked them. I think it might be a good idea to read at least one of them, so I can actually have my own opinion.Ksju wrote:Absolutely NOT!!!Cypress wrote:Shame on me because I haven’t read any book by Dan Brown

Liked them a lot or strongly disliked… Hmmm… (Maybe people who is not so exacting to literature – like it, those who prefer good, real literature dislike it…)
For me indeed it’s not so interesting to discuss it. Just to make clear myself…
I’m not really against this book! Of course you may read it of you have a free evening. I spent one – and not so bad…
I’m just talking that we should clearly understand what kind of literature it is. And if there wouldn’t spend so big money on promotion of the book and you wouldn’t see it on every corner I just simple forget about the book on the next day! Like every other book of the kind, any other street detective…
(By the way I must confess I received a little pleasure reading the book - if we still consider it as literature – there’re no characters, no normal idea, and language is very poor. From this point of view it’s really uninteresting.)
Resemble average middling Hollywood action, just running, firing and explosions and nothing more. But it’s better to watch smth like this than read I think.
Just only hope the movie will be a little bit better. (anyway as there will be Jan Reno)

talking about modern literature (excluding beloved russian detectives of course...) not every new releasing books is worth paying attention on it, but Dan Brown is among those writers that i would like to read (if i have a spare evening ). Please don’t involve me in all this… !!! (But I’ve had some smiles reading Tora’s note)
Just… I know about translation, but still… I prefer bigger masters.
And I’m not talking about bad-good books if you still think so! And modern literature too…
Just usually real literature (like one of kinds of art) exists and just literature for the masses, popular literature. This poplit may be good and qualitative too but it always be a books for an evening and nothing more. One, two nice evenings – if book is a little bit qualitative and talented – but then in a week you simply forget this book. That’s all!
P.S. By the way Tora, as you may understand me, Don’t you think that maybe Akunin’s series about Fandorin as the same kind of literature is more artistic and better?
I’m not really crazy-on-Jan-Reno (interesting term)…
But he is smth special it’s true and a Frenchman too…
Thank you.

i decided not to use quote as it would be toooo long to read!
sure you may! I have no lisence yet.
I read akunin and i don't like it pretty much! just one evening! i wonder how the authors write in a manner when you are not fascinated but still can't help reading... though you see it is not big writter... the same goes to akunin!
Please, Ksju, don't make me be involved in any kind of misconception between! I see that i'm not speaking properly about my tastes but keep judging others... forgive me if i said something wrong or ... i don't know...
The fact is Jan Reno is spanish! amazing! it doubles my admiration!!! 8)

Jan Reno… Spanish… (no matter indeed… still… veryveryvery cute)
But I read that he was born in Morocco (not Spain and not France). But it’s really no matter!
And you call me “another one crazy-on-Jan-Reno”… You see I’m too ill-informed to be another…
And, yes, as for Akunin, I’m not his fan. Just I think his works are more good-made from artistic positions.

Oh dear!
My list of books to recommend is endless like The Ednless Story by Michael Ende :D , but as my favourites are fantasy books, here are some of my gratest loves:
1. The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
2. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
3. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
4. Inkheart by the german author Cornelia Funke, an enchanting triology for all those who love books, the next is Inkspell and the third one is yet to be published
5. Thoe's journey by Catherine Clement, don't know, if the title is written correctly, because I've read it only in German and Polish. It's a bokk about all the main religion's of the world
Okay, that's all for today

Hi, laetetia.
I'm very happy I've got a reply from you. As soon as I recived your reply, I searched What conutry is Costa Rica. It's very different from Japan.
I've also read some misteries by Agatha Cristie in Japanese but not in other languages.
In other hand, I'm interested in Spanish and not regulatory I'm studying Spanish by watching on TV and listening music.
If you know, I want to read some nursery books in Spanish.

But maybe you can try to read some little tales for kids. There you can learn vocabulary and at the same time you don't be very confuse. Or that I think so.
For me Japan is a gratefuly country, I am really in love of your country, by your history and traditions, every is wonderful there!

Hi, laetia.
I've afraid my reply had been hard to understand or
there had been some inapropriate things in my reply.
By the way I'm studying Espanol somtimes, only two words I've learned are vamos and ora... and most difficult in studying Espanol is the completely change in one word, for example "yo soy..." and "tu eles..."
Sorry for I wrote long mail unconcered with this forum.
I'm searching some book written espanol in the nearest book store.
I'm going to home. Buenos noches

Can I fix some mistakes?
You most to write: "hora" not "ora", "tu eres" not "tu eles" and finally "Buenas noches" not "buenos noches"
However, it is ok. I know for the foreign people the Spanish (Español) are very difficult, because we have a lot of words, verbs, adjectives whit the same meaning, and different pronunciation or things like that...
But if you like I can help you, and you can help to me whit my Japanese :)

Hi, laetetia.
Thank you for correcting my spelling.
I didn't check the spell and I remembered "h" was not pronunced in Espanol when you corrected.
In this summer I'm going to visit to Brazil and the language in Brazil is Portoghese. My friend, who teach Espanol in university in Japan, tell me Espanol and Portoghese are very similar and if they can talk Espanol, they can communicate easily.
Is it true?
By the way, I want to know that Japanese commic or anime are popoular in your country like Europe or America. If you like it, I could give you some information of them.
