Once I told with a old woman who fought in WWII. She told me some sad stories about our troops that tried to break the siege of Leningrad. They attacted lots of time the enemy but without any success. And she remembers that hundreds of soldiers died daily. It was painful to hear.
And now I just finished reading this book. Indeed, some of our generals really cared little about lives of our soldiers. This book is about one of them - Zhukov. It's really good reading for those who are interested in the history of WWII because the author looks in a different way on some well known issues of that war like the Berlin operation in 1945 or USSR preparition for the war in 1941.
