This book, Freedom by Jonathan Franzen is billed as the novel of the decade by a lot of people. It's one of those "Great American Novels." Almost 600 pages of delving into the minutiae of American life and the psychology of Americans in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
I recommend the book, but I don't know if it's great for non-native speakers, because it might be TOO American (as in, contain too many references that foreign people wouldn't understand). Otherwise, a great book.
