Travel to Beijing

Hi, I haven't been here for a while and the forum has been changed a bit.

I am planning to go to Beijing from Hanoi, Vietnam, for about 7 to 10 days. I want to spend my whole trip in Beijing, or another city but definitly not travel like crazy. I want to discovery the city (cities) and enjoy my trip. That's why I want to travel on my own but not with a travel company....The problem is .....I dont know much about Beijing yet.

Any people here have any experience? Please help me with my plan of where to stay, where to go.

My chinese is just basic, I will not be hungry there but I cannot communicate as well as in English.
