Besides Windows there is actually nothing else to use here. However, I saw Linux CD's in sale in a shop, but I never bought it and I can say nobody buys it. I don't know why. Perhaps, Linux needs a good PR, advertising...We have a Microsoft's official distributor here. And the government of the country where I live has discussed a strategic plans with Microsoft in Davos economical forum 2008. They're planing to develop an informational technologies here besides oil and gas sector of our economy. If they will succeed their goals, I think there is no future for Linux as a competitive player in the market here.

I think those linux CD's they sell in shop is no point to buy for personal use anyway. It's almost same expensive as windows, but you don't bay for software since I think GNU software can't sell. It's free. They sell user support, that you can call to them and ask help if you get suck.. or there might be some documentation or books included. Some shop might also sell cd's that they have self made and charge for hardware (compact disk) and the trouble they have had to make it.. then those cd's arten't so expensive.

Governments just want to get Microsoft's Investments, but people are still free to use what they like. In many countries governments yet chose Linux.. for many reasons.. to be independent (not to depend on a single company), to decrease expenses.. Here they seems only to talk a lot, but when someone need to send some document to government. They might not accept "odt"(open document format) format.(It might be changed by now, but a year ago they sometime send it back, by asking "what we supposed to do with this file") They surely accept Microsoft doc and also pdf format. I guess It's against constitution to ask citizens to buy expensive software.. to communicate with gov. well they accept pdf that can generate with Open Office too but still... I would still like government set more in linux and Open Source Software. It might be expensive first for schooling users and so, but in end it would be investment for future.. I think it would pay back many times.

There's a movie about Linux (The code Linux) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 5415745977 It have some parts in Swedish and Finnish and Chinese. But it's still worth to watch. I liked it. These hackers or programmers looks so cool in that movie. I wonder if they are really in real life same like in this movie, or the movie maker wanted to show them more interesting.. Well anyway the movie is about how Linux born and explains the philosophy behind of the Linux and open source.

I did search for complete English version of this movie(this one have Swedish subs) but didn't found any yet. I only found some Germans and French ones.

Hello guys,
I use Windows Vista (I hate lol) in my laptop, but for servers i think that Linux is the best, because it's so easy and working fine in all application, I have a webhosting service and I tried Windows 2003 and Linux CentOS, of couse Linux is much better, specially for PHP language, you can use Win 2003 if you want see desktop or something like that (Remote access), unfortunately, for domestic users, Win is better, so if you can try use Linux, go ahead and you can learn about this OS on Google or Linux foruns.

Thanks!

Why do people say win is better for domestic users? I use computer in home and I find Linux is the best for me. I actually have 2 computers running with linux. Other an old 100 MHz pentium is running with freesco linux as router. It's better than regular router switch combos. It have greater firewall. I have also 5 Nic installed into it. So I have 4 separate local networks. I can give each network different rights and speeds and all. It's good if you share Internet with your neighbour since u can totally block your neighbour to see your own LAN. Actually I'm thinking to make one more powerful router/server where I can run bittorent and some other useful stuff. I was thinking to do so that clients from LAN can use that bittorent, then they don't need to let their computers running whole time. I have an old working 1 Ghz Celeron but it have only 3 PCI slots. So I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it.

Today I was again witness of another good side of linux. My nephew did made a computer game in c++ It worked fine with windows xp he even got first price in a game making contest. Well it was a small contest with only four participants :D Anyhow Since he used Allegro game library. We thought to compile it also for Linux. It went all fine of course. But running it in linux did bring out some page fault bugs in game. They didn't come out in Windows. So obviously it means linux is better. :) There's many good use for it. For servers. For info kiosks. For info boards.. If there's some program that doesn't run in linux. I consider it as bad software and say to my self that I don't need it. If there's some hardware that works only in windows I also don't need that. I actually try to boycott every company that makes something that's only for windows.

Ubuntu is absolutely amazing! For the novice (like me) it installs and runs easier than Windows. Of course there is a whole new set of jargon terms you have to learn, but they are equivalent to any other OS.

For the expert, you can set up a server only install, without a GUI.....BLAZING speed. I did this with a expert friend and was amazed at the speed.

We've also used Debian, but that seems more for the intermediate/expert. I appreciate Ubuntu's "approachability" for the novice.

i use both Windows and Linux , i think Linux is a little bit difficult for normal users, also it seems that not all windows programs are available for Linux.
any way Linux is better that windows in several things such as viruses, free programs ....

Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. The operating system (OS) relays instructions from an application to, for instance, the computer's processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then sends the results back to the application via the operating system.
