what does "defeats the purpose" mean? thanks.

Suppose you are English and you want to learn to speak Thai. So you go to a language school to learn Thai. (That is the purpose: to learn Thai.) But when you start your lessons, your teacher explains everything in English. That rather defeats the purpose.
