what is the difference halt and stop, are they same

Please, I want to knew the difference between the vreb halt and the verb stop, are they same in use.

They are very similar but...

halt (verb) often suggests to stop suddenly. It is also used typically as a military command.

halt (noun) is often used for a temporary suspension of movement or activity
a halt in production
"We are not wholly bad or good, who live our lives under Milk Wood"

Hello,

"Halt" as a verb sounds a bit harsh. In most situations, if you want a person or people to stop, you would say "stop". If you were to yell out "halt" it would sound like you were in the military or you were just an overzealous person. I may have to start using that word in my class. My students don't seem to listen to "stop"!
