Please tell me the difference between these two nouns:

ANTECEDENT and PRECEDENT

antecedent: something that comes before another thing

"Depression is sometimes the antecedent of war."

precedent: an earlier event that is used an an example to follow in similar circumstances

"The election of a woman as Britain's prime minister was without precedent."
